Invitation to celebrate World Ocean Day this June 8:

THE OCEAN FROM THE DIFFERENT VIEWS OF FULBRIGHT ALUMNI, CHILE

  • Conversation on the occasion of World Ocean Day 2021, whose theme this year is "The ocean: life and subsistence."
  • The activity is organized by the Fulbright Chile Office and the Chilean State Alumni Association, with the support of the United States Embassy in Santiago and the Chilean North American Institute.

“Let's celebrate the ocean” is the theme of the virtual conversation in which Fulbright scholarship recipients from Chile will commemorate World Ocean Day, this June 8, at 9:30 am, in a joint transmission between Fulbright's FB LIVE Chile, State Alumni Chile and Instituto Chileno Norteamericano. 8 de junio, a las 9:30 de la mañana, en transmisión conjunta entre los FB LIVE de Fulbright Chile, State Alumni Chile e Instituto Chileno Norteamericano.

The Fulbright Scholarship program, one of the most prestigious in the world, celebrates 75 years in 2021 and the professionals who have benefited from this US Department of State Programs are taking advantage of this occasion to debate and make visible a very wide range of issues of development, democracy, science and art, among many others.

Thus, in this virtual event, three outstanding former Chilean scholars will present their different perspectives and challenges that the ocean currently presents to our country. They are: Felipe Paredes (Fulbright 2005), a marine biologist who is an expert in public policy; Fernanda Oyarzún (Fulbright 2002), scientist, artist and educator; and Patricio Winckler (Fulbright 2010), civil engineer specialized in coastal engineering.

Antonio Campaña, Executive Director of Fulbright Chile, highlighted that commemorating the program's 75 years worldwide is “a special opportunity for the great community of former Fulbright scholars in our country, one of the largest in Latin America, to contribute to expanding the debates on development in the broadest sense of the word.” And he also specified that “the three alumni invited to this discussion represent a distinctive strength of our program: professionals who at some point in their careers realized that in order to face complex problems, they had to get involved in the search for solutions, and go beyond the traditional disciplinary limits”, he remarked.

On the other hand, the president of the Chilean State Alumni Association, Francisco Morey, indicated that World Oceans Day and its motto this year "The ocean: life and subsistence", makes us reflect on one of the greatest challenges of the humanity, which is the protection and restoration of the ecosystem functions of the sea in all corners of the globe. "The diverse and expert perspectives of the panelists who will accompany us in the discussion on June 8 are a faithful expression of how complex our relationship with the ocean is, but also how fascinating it is to protect it and the communities that depend most directly on it", he expressed.

PANELISTS´S BIOGRAPHY

Felipe Paredes

Felipe Paredes is a marine biologist, with more than 20 years of experience in scientific research, public policy, and natural resource management. He is currently in charge of the protected marine areas of the Ministry of the Environment, which in whole, cover more than 43% of the Chilean sea surface.

He is a Marine Biologist from the University of Valparaíso, Master of Arts in Marine Affairs from the University of Rhode Island, as a fellow of the OEA Fulbright Scholarship in Ecology in 2005, and a PhD from the University of Maine. He has extensive experience and recognition in marine conservation, leading the creation and implementation of marine protected areas in Rapa Nui, Juan Fernández, and Chilean Patagonia, among others.

Fernanda Oyarzún

Fernanda Oyarzún holds a PhD in Biology, University of Washington (USA), a Bachelor of Biology from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Fulbright Scholar, studied the Interdisciplinary Pedagogy Program (UW Bothell), and has a Certificate in Editorial Design from Universidad de Chile and trained in Scientific Illustration (UW).

She works as a researcher, scientific illustrator, and sculptor, working in both worlds — science and art — exploring the biodiversity, forms, and evolution of marine organisms. She has taught and participated in projects of interdisciplinary pedagogy, dissemination and communication and visualization of science, as reflected in the interdisciplinary and interhemispheric program of which she is a co-founder and co-director “ASKXXI: Art + Science Knowledge Building and Sharing in the XXI Century” which was executed in its pilot version 2018-2019 in collaboration with the US Embassy in Chile. She is also a co-founder and co-director of “Biennal Concepción, Art & Science” and of “Robsonella Project: creating a bridge between scientific illustration and research on the marine diversity of Chile”. Among her most recent sculptural projects are "Phylogenetic School", "River Identity", "Marine Consciousness", and "Creating Realities, Adaptation to Climate Change"; and also, at present, she is working on the FONDART project "Symbiosis: women creators from the mountain range to the Sea".

Fernanda is currently an associate researcher at the Millennium Institute in Coastal Socioecology (SECOS) where she develops a line of research in art and science. She is also an associate researcher at CIBAS and the Faculty of Sciences of the Catholic University of La Santísima Concepción, and at the I ~ mar Research Center of the University of Los Lagos, Chile, and working independently as an artist in her studio, as well. www.fernandaoyarzun.com www.fernandaoyarzun.com

Patricio Winckler

Civil Engineer from the Federico Santa María Technical University (2002), Patricio Winckler has dedicated his work to the sea after long academic journeys in Europe and the United States in which he “sharpened” the pencil and freely devoted to the study of coastal engineering.

After spending time in Finland and England, he obtained a Master in Environmental Technology from the University of Wolverhampton (2002) and, years later, a Master in Port and Coastal Engineering from the Center for Studies and Experimentation of Public Works, in Spain (2004). After years of work as a project engineer in port and coastal engineering consultancies, in 2005 he joined the Ocean Engineering department at the University of Valparaíso, to begin his academic career.

Between 2010 and 2015, he completed a PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering with a specialization in environmental fluid mechanics at Cornell University, United States, under the direction of Professor Philip Liu.

His interests span a wide range of topics related to coastal engineering, from environmental conditions to the design of coastal works. Today, he divides his academic work at the University of Valparaíso and Cornell "with this somewhat relegated but omnipresent passion, which is to look at the world from the perspective of creation."
